My Process
My practice engages ceramics and elemental materials to explore questions of existence and interconnectedness. Through sculptural objects and transmedia installations, I work with forms that embody the indivisible nature of all things—the sphere—as well as the vessel, a symbol of the void and its infinite potential.
I primarily employ mold-based processes and slip-dipped burnable materials, embracing transformation as material shifts from fragile to permanent, presence to absence. Light, material, and time are central agents within my work, shaping not only the outcome of each piece but also the viewer’s experience of it.
A restrained palette of white, black, and red anchors my practice. These colors speak to cycles of being: white as presence, black as absence, and red as the vital force of the body. By limiting color, I aim to distill form and concept, allowing clarity of voice while foregrounding existential questions.
My goal is to create work that invites reflection on the wonder of existence—how fragility and permanence, void and fullness, presence and absence continuously shape our lives. Through the elemental and the ephemeral, I seek to uncover moments of resonance that connect viewers to a shared experience.
“The journey from Southern Wisconsin to my new home in West Texas transitioned me from a landscape that envelops to one that exposes a person. In this place, red and golden flat plains are met on the distant horizon by an ever-expanding blue sky. I felt separated from the landscape; I was now a feature on rather than of the land. This separation created an expanse that encouraged a critical evaluation of my relationship and potential impact on the environment. I seek to make visible the interconnection that exists within all things by utilizing biological materials as the liaison of truth.”
